Thousands of shoppers will be charged to park their cars on the streets under council plans to raise up to £2.5m a year from motorists.

Elmbridge and Reigate and Banstead will be the first areas to see free parking nears shops axed in May or June 2011.

Surrey County Council will introduce the fees in 3,500 on-street parking spaces across Surrey over the next 14 months, with Epsom and Ewell scheduled for November 2011.

Councillor Ian Lake, cabinet member for transport, is expected to approve a consultation on the plans on Wednesday, January 12.

A council report said it made a £500,000 loss on on-street parking in 2009-10, and blamed government cuts for the decision to introduce the fees, which will be between 60p and £1.40 an hour.

The report said: “A culture exists that in the main, you do not pay for on-street parking within Surrey.

“Public attitudes have changed in other areas of the country where charging exists, and there is no known reason why this will not be the same within Surrey.”

The meeting to approve the introduce of the fees will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, January 12 at County Hall, Penrhyn Road, Kingston.
