Residents have six weeks to have their last say on a controversial waste plan that could see a modern incinerator come to the borough.

The South London Waste Plan identified 11 industrial areas in Sutton, Kingston, Merton and Croydon as possibly suitable for new treatment facilities over the next 10 years.

The list includes part of the Wandle Valley Trading Estate, the Kimpton Industrial Estate and the Beddington Industrial Area in Sutton.

The four councils decided to press ahead in October, despite the Government axing £225m of private finance initiative funding.

The planning document would give the boroughs more powers when assessing planning applications for waste treatment facilities.

Councillor Simon James, chair of the south London waste partnership group, said landfill was environmentally damaging and not financially viable because of sharply increasing landfill taxes.

The document’s publication period, during which residents can comment, runs until February 15, before it is submitted for deliberation.

The plans are available at southlondonwasteplan.limehouse.co.uk/portal, council offices, and principle libraries.
