Ryman League Division One South leaders Metropolitan Police reached the last eight of the Ryman Championship Manager Cup with an emphatic 4-1 win at Ryman Premier League side Tooting & Mitcham on Wednesday night.

The Blues showed their intent from the kick off and, after only five minutes, the home side failed to clear James Field’s free kick and Neil Lampton drove the ball home from 20 yards.

Two minutes later, another long free kick was not cleared and Gary Drewett fired home the Blues’ second from 10 yards.

The game was as good as over in the 21st minute when Field’s good cross was met by an emphatic drive from James Greenaway.

The pressure on Tooting was demonstrated by an occasion when they had the ball on the edge of the Blues area but ended up playing it 80 yards back to keeper Jamie Butler.

Tooting’s first real opening came in the 31st minute when striker Jason Henry let rip with a 25-yard shop that Blues keeper Will Packham just tipped over the bar.

The Blues went off the boil at the start of the second half and, having made two subsitutions, the Terrors showed more determination.

Tooting got a deserved goal after 55 minutes when one of the subs, Reece Hall, weaved his way past four defenders before driving past Will Packham.

Ten minutes later, Vernon Francis had to be helped off the field after a crunching tackle near the halfway line and Blues boss Jim Cooper made three substitutions.

Met Police put their place in the next round beyond doubt with 11 minutes left. Craig Watkins’ crossfield pass was met by Ron Edwards, who hit a 35-yarder into the roof of the net.

In the closing stages, James Cottee entertained the crowd with some individual skills and forced Butler into a fine save.
