A block on adding any more elderly and disabled people to a waiting list for taxi vouchers could be near to ending after county councillors stepped in with donations.

There are already 100 vulnerable people on the waiting list for Elmbridge Borough Council's taxi £18,000 voucher scheme hoping to be next in line.

The vouchers, which come in a booklet, allow elderly and disabled people who cannot use buses, trains or cars to hire taxis.

In a statement the council said due to the popularity of the taxi voucher scheme, which began in June 2007, there was limited value in adding extra names to the 100 long waiting list.

But the council said if it had more funding from individuals it could help more people.

Surrey County Councillors Mike Bennison and Margaret Hicks contributed £3,080 between them from the public funds they are given to distribute to good causes.

Coun Bennison, councillor for Hinchley Wood, Claygate and Oxshott, said: "I have previously supported this scheme and very much hope that those people I have supported have been able to use their voucheers and reached activities they might not have been able to reach."

Coun Hicks, member for Hersham, said: "It is a pleasure to be able to support people to help them live their lives.

"I hope the people who have received the vouchers make good use of them."
