Residents have six weeks to have their last say on a controversial waste plan that could see a modern incinerator come to the borough.

The South London Waste Plan identified 11 industrial areas in Kingston, Croydon, Merton and Sutton as possibly suitable for new treatment facilities over the next 10 years.

The list includes Chessington industrial estate, next to the A3 between Tolworth and Hook.

The four councils decided to press ahead in October, despite the Government axing £225m of private finance initiative funding.

The planning document would give the boroughs more powers when assessing planning applications for waste treatment facilities.

Councillor Simon James, executive member for planning, said landfill was environmentally damaging and not financially viable because of sharply increasing landfill taxes.

The document’s publication period, during which residents can comment on them, runs until February 15, before it is submitted for deliberation.
