A man, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s and the rider of the bicycle, was pronounced dead at the scene at 7.11am.

The white Vauxhall van believed to be involved in the collision stopped at the scene.

No arrests have been made, and road closures have were put in place although have now reopened.

The incident will be investigated by the police's Road Death Investigation Unit.

Meanwhile, residents warned that the junction was dangerous and a serious accident or fatality was inevitable.

Patricia Purkiss, 74, who lives opposite the scene of the collision said: "Its tragic, but it was inevitable."

Her husband Keith, 74, said: "Several roads meet at the junction and the cars come down too fast. It can be hard for drivers to see what is coming. There have been a number of accidents"

They said the Woodcote Green Residents Association had been campaigning to have traffic calming measures brought in at the junction and other areas around Woodcote Green.

Proposals have included speed cameras on the stretch of the A237 Woodcote Road, or a reduction in the speed limit.

A motorcyclist was killed at a junction at the other end of the green, by Wallington Girls School, in a collision in March 2009.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the unit based at Hampton Traffic Garage on 0208 941 9011.
