Wimbledon’s own millionaire’s row is officially the most expensive place to live in the country, according to one survey.

Research by Lloyds TSB revealed Parkside, which overlooks Wimbledon Common and contains an array of large houses and mansions, is the most expensive road in England, with average prices of £5.1m.

That means the average price of a house in Wimbledon Parkside is more than 10 times the average price of a house in Merton, which is £479,000, according to the Land Registry.

Lloyds TSB attributed the plush avenue’s recent surge in property prices to a spike in demand from celebrities and overseas buyers splashing out on luxury properties close to central London and the All England Tennis Club.

The road also hosted the Pope in September during his first official state visit to Britain, when he stayed at the Vatican’s embassy, where he held a mass in the chapel.

Dominic Pasqua, a partner at Knight Frank estate agents in Wimbledon High Street, said it was unusual for Parkside to come top.

Mr Pasqua said: “In the past year we have sold four on the market for £14m, £10m, £8.5m and £6.25m – normally Kensington and Chelsea would be the most expensive.

“The residents are not really household names but they are well known in their fields.”

The same survey found Wimbledon Common was also home to the country’s seventh most expensive road, Cedar Park Gardens, after the former home of Chelsea footballer Florent Malouda recorded average prices of £3.6m.

Nitesh Patel, a housing economist at Lloyds TSB, said: “The survey shows the most expensive streets continue to be tightly clustered in small areas.

“Prime locations continue to attract the affluent, helping drive up house prices.”
