Met Police dominated Wednesday night's Championship Manager third round tie from the kick off.

A Craig Watkins 30 yard shot hit the cross bar and bounced back out followed minutes later by Gary Drewett's volley which was blocked on the line.

The first goal came after 11 minutes.

Defender Adam Davidson played the ball across his own goal area, the ball was not cleared and Blues striker Craig Watkins seized on the loose ball and deftly drove the ball under the approaching Keiron Thorpe the Eastbourne Town goal keeper.

Seven minutes later, Vernon Francis picked up a cross on the far side and drove home goal number two.

The sparse and wet visitors’ supporters had to wait until 24 minutes for the first effort on the Blues goal.

Liam Wright saw his 35-yard effort pass well wide of the post.

On 39 minutes the game was sealed. A cross to Gary Drewett was driven into the back of the net for goal number three.

Within a minute of the restart, a Blues attack finished with a great cross for Eddie Smith who fired home the fourth via the underside of the bar.

The Blues could and should have snatched a few more goals. Watkins drove the ball well over the bar. Gary Drewett had his shot blocked on the goal line. Eddie Smith had his effort well saved by Thorpe.

Finally on 76 minutes Eddie Smith for his second goal, found the back of the net with a volley to make it five nil up. The game however was far from over.

Eastbourne Town may have been down but to their credit were far from out.

Sam Crabb on 84 minutes found the back of the net with a fine solo run and great finishing touch for a consolation goal.

Minutes later and Peter Cooper should have made it two. He broke free of the Blues defence and from just two yards out from the Blues goal line struck the ball the wrong side of the post.

Minutes later Brett Patten with a 21 yard free kick on target was foiled by a great save from Blues goal keeper Dave Smalley. Despite the dismal weather a very entertaining match.

Blues: Smalley, Taylor, Simpson, Gwyther, Edwards, Drewett (Brown), Francis, Smith T (Lampton), Watkins (Field), Smith E. Cottee.

Attendance: 49.

The Blues visit Whitehawk in Ryman League Division One South on Saturday and host Walton & Hersham next Wednesday.
