When you’re four it’s fair to say your attention span can be...well, short.

So it was hard to know what my son would make of the Little Big Club Live in Concert, but with a cast list including Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, Fifi the Flower Tot and Pingu, I was hoping for big things. And I was not disappointed.

From the moment the curtain went up and the Big Little Club band appeared on stage my little one was hooked.

In turns singing, shouting at the stage and joining in with the concert band, it was hard not to be swept up by his excitement.

The lively first half was split into short sets, just long enough to capture the imagination but not so long that the predominately young audience got bored.

There was added entertainment when three giant, inflatable balls were thrown into the stalls for the audience to pass around – two returned intact, the other deflated, raising a laugh among the adults.

By comparison the second half fell slightly flat. The tempo slowed down and after almost an hour’s entertainment there were signs that even the most patient were getting fidgety.

But the grand finale came as a pick-me-up with all the characters returning to the stage and Pingu, who did not have his own set, performing a short dance routine – no mean feat when you’re a giant penguin.

The best bit of the show? According to my son it was Pingu because he was so funny, closely followed by Fireman Sam.

And you know it’s been a hit when your child asks “when are we going to the theatre again?”
