The man accused of murdering a partygoer at a New Year's Eve celebration broke down at the Old Bailey this morning as he admitted the death was all his fault.

Saturday Lobsang Hassan, 30, wept in the dock as he explained the shooting of Darren Deslandes, who died, and his brother Junior was an "accidental tragedy".

Mr Hassan told the court he had picked up the gun from a friend's house after being thrown out of the party in the Newton Arms pub, Thornton Heath, early on January 1 this year.

He said he had no intention of hurting either of the boys, who pinned him against the wall when he pulled the gun from his trousers after entering the pub.

He said: "I am guilty of manslaughter and GBH and I have to take responsibility for that.

"I always face my responsibilities."

He told the jury he only wanted an apology from the father of the shot brothers, Wintworth Deslandes, for being thrown out of a pub he had been coming to for nine years.

Mr Hassan denied attempting to flee the country shortly after the killing, telling the court he had bought a return plane ticket to America to visit his mother and intended to return after two weeks.

He said: "I didn't want to run, I didn't want to be a fugitive."

The builder also denied pointing the gun in Wintworth Deslandes' face and pulling the trigger as he attempted to flee the pub.

Mr Hassan is charged with the murder of Darren Deslandes, attempted murder of Junior and Wintworth and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

He denies all charges.

The trial continues.
