Epsom and Ewell residents who raced to glory in the Nonsuch Park Mile in March raised a staggering £40,690 for Sport Relief 2010 making it the second highest fundraising event across the UK, according to the council.

1,493 local people of all ages rose to the challenge for the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile event on Sunday 21 March at Nonsuch Park.

Councillor Clive Woodbridge, Chairman of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council’s Leisure Committee, said: “This is a fantastic sum of money raised for a very good cause. On top of this, lots of people of all ages and fitness levels had a great time doing something that will help them be healthier.

“The success of the event shows not only how our Council's staff are prepared to 'go the extra mile' above and beyond the call of duty to put on such fundraisers, but also the tremendous spirit and generosity of the people of Epsom and Ewell and Sutton."

Every single penny of the money raised will be spent by Comic Relief to help disadvantaged people, both in the UK and across the world's poorest countries to turn their lives around.
