More than 170 vehicles were stopped during a day of action by Surrey Police and partner agencies targeting motorists who were driving in an anti-social manner in Mole Valley.

On the spot fixed penalty notices, prohibitions notices and summons’ were issued to a number of motorists for a variety of offences including speeding, using a mobile phone and vehicle defects.

A total of 174 vehicles were stopped during the roadside education and enforcement day (Reed) on Wednesday, November 10, on the A25 Reigate Road, where the speed limit is 40mph.

Neighbourhood inspector Terri Poulton, said: “Reed events are designed to educate drivers who may have fallen into bad habits and take enforcement action where appropriate. This was a particularly busy multi-agency event with a total of 174 vehicles stopped and action taken against more than 150 motorists.”

Officers from Mole Valley’s safer neighbourhood team were joined by partners from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, the DVLA, Surrey County Council, the Environment Agency and the local council.

Action was taken against more than 150 motorists these included 34 motorists driving over the speed limit, 43 drivers or passengers not wearing seatbelts and 28 people driving while using a hand-held mobile phone.

Depending on the offence, motorists were either given a verbal warning, a fixed penalty notice (£60 fine and three penalty-points) have to comply with the Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme or words of advice.

Dr Andrew Povey, leader of Surrey County Council pledged £1million to set up the campaign after the issue was regularly raised as a concern by residents.
