Putney MP Justine Greening held a meeting with the chief executive of British Airports Authority (BAA) to discuss the company’s plans to tackle aircraft noise from Heathrow.

Ms Greening met with Colin Matthews to raise her concerns from local residents about increases in aircraft noise and the number of night flights over the area, and she urged BAA to engage in constructive debate with residents on the issue of aircraft noise to move forward.

BAA explained that they are currently consulting with the Department for Transport and the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs on their draft noise action plan that is due to be published by the end of the year.

They also discussed various options to reduce noise including the use of continuous descent approach, fines for airlines breaching noise limits and encouraging airlines to use newer, greener, quieter aircrafts.

Ms Greening said: “Though we have won the fight against a third runway, I wanted to meet with the chief executive of BAA to ensure the noise action plan actually makes a difference to our quality of life locally.

“As our local MP I am going to continue to press for independent monitoring of aircraft noise and a review of the fining levels set for airlines that breach noise limits.”
