A complaint against a councillor who left a comment on a website allegedly implying the author of a blog was racist is not being investigated because it is not “in the public interest”.

Labour Councillor Ed Davie, of Thornton ward, left a comment Jason Cobb’s blog, onionbagblog.com, saying Mr Cobb was moving out of Lambeth to be in a “whites-only village”.

Mr Cobb then complained to Lambeth Council, alleging the comment was disrespectful and implied he was a racist.

The issue was taken to the standard’s sub-committee, but the investigation was dropped and it was decided Coun Davie would receive training on using new media.

Coun Davie’s comment read: “Calling democratically elected people who work hard to make this borough (which you slag off as being full of ‘fat cockneys’ and antisocial ‘yoofs’) a better place [words redacted] “Obviously you can dish it out but can’t take it at all. I hope your whites-only olde English village is more up to your standards.”

Mr Cobb claimed Coun Davie had breached one of 10 general principles of public life: “Members should promote equality by not discriminating against any person, and by treating people with respect”.

However, the standards sub-commitee decided the “breach identified by the complainant does not constitute a breach of the code itself” and “the complaint did not warrant council funds being spent on an investigation”.

Mr Cobb said: “I was deeply offended by the slur made on my character by Coun Davie. Absolutely no evidence was offered to substantiate such an absurd claim.

“I am pleased that Coun Davie will now be able to get the expert help he clearly needs, to participate positively as part of an online community to help improve the borough.”

Coun Davie said: “I am not surprised the committee found me to be innocent of all charges and I am happy to accept their recommendation.”
