Soldiers past and present have been honoured at Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday services across Merton.

On Thursday ceremonies took place at the Clock Tower in Fair Green, Mitcham and at the Civic Centre in London Road, Morden. Later in the day children made their own memorial poppy wreaths during a craft session at Mitcham Library in London Road.

On Sunday remembrance services took place at the Nelson Hospital forecourt in Merton Park, St Lawrence’s Church in Morden and the war memorials in Mitcham and Wimbledon Village.

The ceremonies were organised by Merton Council and the Royal British Legion, and featured veterans and members of the borough’s cadet forces.

The mayor of Merton, councillor Oonagh Moulton, said: “This year, we particularly remember the men and women who are serving in the armed forces on active service and peace-keeping duties. We also remember the many people who gave their lives in the two World Wars and in other conflicts since then. ”

A spokesman for the London branch of the Royal British Legion, which supports servicemen and women, said on Thursday its poppy appeal had raised £225,000 in just 24 hours.
