The man wrongly accused of Rachel Nickell's murder has offered to give evidence to help her family receive compensation from the Metropolitan Police.

Support for Andre Hanscombe's human rights court action came from Colin Stagg, who spent 14 months behind bars before being acquitted of her murder.

Mr Stagg said: "Let's hope he and his son get justice in the European Court.

"It's long overdue and they certainly haven't had it here in Britain.

"For 16 years The Met refused to admit their failings to Rachel's family and me.

"They were only forced to give a grudging apology when the real killer was convicted.

"But despite a damning report by the Independent Police Complaints Commission they still wriggled out of paying any compensation.

"Their treatment of the Hanscombes has been disgusting.

"Despite our differences in the past - which were caused by the Met's secret briefings against me - I'll do everything I can to help him.

"I'll be happy to give evidence on his behalf if needed."
