A Thornton Heath social club is crying out for volunteers to help continue its vital service for the area’s senior citizens.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of The Darby and Joan Club, on Brigstock Road, which has been part of the community for 60 years and is a main feature of life for many of its 150 members.

But, with most of its current 10-strong volunteer force over 80, it is in desperate need of additional help as soon as possible to deliver its busy programme of activities.

“Without volunteers, we couldn’t run,” said Club Secretary Angela Harding. “What you have got to remember is all these ladies are over 80. They can’t rush around like two-year-olds so everything takes a bit longer.”

“If we had a few more, one could be doing the teas and coffees, one could be doing the food. Just to make life a bit easier for them.”

Mrs Harding explained that help is particularly needed on Wednesdays and for bingo on Fridays but the club is flexible to suit the availability of anyone that wants to get involved.

The Darby and Joan Club entertains up to 30 members at a time and new volunteers’ time would mostly be spent helping out in the kitchen. No prior experience or qualifications are required.

The club is a registered charity and is open Monday to Friday 11am – 4pm. Facilities include a snooker room and two lounges, as well as stage and dining hall.
