An eco-awareness group has been busy putting into place a two-year project to reduce carbon emissions in a Mitcham housing estate.

Sustainable Merton launched the Low Carbon Zone project this year, which aimed to reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent in the Phipp’s Bridge Estate, which is a 0.3km area.

The project, supported by Merton Council and national charity Groundwork, is one of 10 Low Carbon Zones outlined across the capital by London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson.

A spokesman said: “So far there have been five successful community engagement events with residents, including school fairs and a barbecue.

“Two Green Doctors have been employed and trained. They are visiting homes to procure measures such as draght proofing, radiator reflectors and power down plugs.

“We expect solar panels to be installed in the two schools of the zone in the near future.”

The group also confirmed that the Phipp’s Bridge Allotmenteers have formed their own association to further to take up and supervision of allotment upkeep.
