Millwall 0
Crystal Palace 0

The 558 Palace fans that made their way to the New Den for this uninspiring encounter have centre-back Darren Ward to thank for the fixture.

Arranged as part of the deal that took Millwall's former fan favourite to Selhurst Park, this particular South London derby was at times little more than a fitness exercise for Peter Taylor's men.

With the boys from SE16 making their SE25 counterparts appear the League One team at times, it was new Lions' boss Nigel Spackman who would have taken more positives from the 90 minutes than his counterpart Peter Taylor.

Millwall looked lively, inventive and full of running. Marvin Williams was the pick of the bunch, creating a number of chances that new signing Filipe Morais should have converted.

An opening fixture at home to Yeovil has probably focused the minds as Millwall don't belong in English football's third tier. On this evidence they look equipped to escape at the first attempt.

Palace did get better in the second half when wholesale changes were made, most notably the partnership of Darren Ward and Leon Cort at centre-back. Expect this to be the combination for Saturday's game at Ipswich.

Up-front Clinton Morrison and James Scowcroft looked a better bet than Sandor Torghelle and Jon Macken did in the first half, but it is in midfield where the real selection dilemma lays.

Taylor has a multitude of riches to choose from, and this being a friendly he experimented with all his midfielders.

Jobi McAnuff and Marco Reich offer creativity on the wings, but who do you leave out from Tom Soares, Ben Watson, Michael Hughes, Carl Fletcher and Mark Kennedy in the centre of the park? I would imagine the naturally wide men are most at risk of not starting.

Coupled with that selection question, Taylor must also name his number one in goal. Julian Speroni didn't make it off the bench, so we must assume Gabor Kiraly to keep his spot with Scott Flinders deputising.

Former Gillingham man Darren Byfield could have won it late on for Millwall but miss-cued his close range header.
