A quick ejection from the League Cup was delivered at Sandhurst Town’s Bottom Meadow in a game that could have been gone to extra-time, at least, had a plethora of chances created in the second half been taken.

As slow start was experienced which may have been as a result of a squad team line up with five changes from the previous outing.

Sandhurst began in fine style and forced three corners in the opening five minutes and it was from the third delivery that the home side took an early lead.

The ball was half cleared where James Wills thumped the ball from 25 yards, clipping the underside of the cross bar on the way and giving Dexter Burt in goal no chance.

This encouraged Sandhurst who took the game to The Curfews penalty area and although they won a couple of more corners, were unable to maintain their momentum and Chertsey steadied the situation.

Few first half chances were created, however, as no real prospect of another goal loomed with the exception of a penetrating run with the ball by Mark McGibbon that ended with a shot that just went wide.

Chertsey had the better of the second half with their passing movement making them look dangerous. Despite winning territory, Chertsey found themselves two down 21 minutes into the half when a breakout presented James Mepham with a goal after Burt had stopped the first shot, but not the follow up.

The final 25 minutes saw Town press for a reply. A Marcus Moody header cleared the home goalkeeper but a defender cleared the ball away. Dean Papali pushed the ball wide from close range off a Tom O’Regan cross then and another Papali effort was thwarted when an attempted chip over the keeper was unsuccessful.

Three more gaping chances to put the ball into he net were all spurned when each time the ball sped across and exposed Sandhurst goalmouth but without any contact being achieved.

Had any touch been made then the 90 minutes game might well have turned into a 120 minute affair but the opportunity was lost.
