A Chessington councillor has thanked generous residents who have contributed to his appeal for disaster-stricken flood victims in Pakistan.

But Councillor Shiraz Mirza warned people are still in dire straits and is urging further donations to the Pakistan Flood Appal, which has raised more than £1,800 since it was launched last month.

Millions of villagers have been displaced by torrential flooding in northern Pakistan, and many relatives who live in the UK have endured a harrowing few months.

Coun Mirza said: “It is actually a very useful amount of money because £1,500 is enough to build a house in one of the poorer areas of Pakistan.

“We have already been able to provide 15 tents to provide temporary shelter for people who have been made homeless.”

Coun Mirza added he was particularly thankful to Hilary Buzasi from the Hotel Antoinette Group, who personally donated £200 to the appeal.

Residents can send cheques, made out to Pakistan Flood Appeal, The Shiraz Mirza Community Hall, 76A Coombe Road, Norbiton KT2 7AZ.

Donations can also be made directly to the trust’s NatWest bank account, using account number 4466 9801 and sort code 60-60-02.
