Caretaker boss Matt Elverson insists he has no interest in taking on the role of Walton & Hersham manager on a permanent basis after stepping into the void created by John Crumplin’s shock departure.

Crumplin quit after Tuesday night’s 2-0 home loss to Godalming Town, their fourth Ryman Division One South game without a win.

And Elverson, who took up a similar position with the Swans at the end of the 2009 season, admits things are very different this time round.

He said: “The one thing I have to stress is that this is not a normal caretaker position.

“I am not interested whatsoever in the job going forward and the club are aware of that.

“I am not involved with the club in any way and in actual fact I had retired from football altogether.

“But the committee contacted me after John quit to ask would I oversee the week’s training and Saturday’s game and I am happy to do that.”

The former central defender took up the reins at Thursday night’s training session, in preparation for Saturday’s trip to Dulwich Hamlet.

And the interim manager accepted he has a job on his hands.

Elverson added: “It is very obvious the place needs a lift.

“Results have not been great and reports have suggested that the performances have been quite shabby as well.

“I will have to familiarise myself quickly with the players and get down to business.”

Elverson also had words for the departing Crumplin, who quit claiming business and family factors were hindering his ability.

He added: “It is obviously a shame that things did not work out for John.

“I know he had his reasons for quitting and I wish him all the best.

“It is naturally upsetting but unfortunately that is the nature of this game.”
