An unprecedented New York-style zero tolerance campaign against crime in north Croydon will have villains living in a “state of fear”, cops claimed.

In one of the largest police operations in the borough, offenders in five wards will be arrested for even the most minor crimes in an attempt to drive criminals from the streets.

The areas to be targeted will be Thornton Heath, Broad Green, West Thornton, Bensham Manor and Selhurst, which all have problems with violent robberies, burglaries and vandalism and have seen several high profile murders.

The operation has been launched after renewed calls from the community to clear the area of crime and decay.

Cops are expecting crime arrest statistics in the five wards to go through the roof as they flood the wards with uniformed and undercover officers.

Almost 100 officers have been set-aside for the operation, including a dedicated task force of one inspector, five sergeants and 18 constables, which will be supported by another 24 PCSOs.

Operation Refresh will be backed by Croydon Council, which will endeavour to remove graffiti and repair vandalised buildings within 24 hours to give residents back pride in their area.

Criminals who are housed by the council could also face eviction.

The first phase of the operation will begin on Monday and last until March.
