New plans are being considered for the redevelopment of Purley Hospital.

Schemes being looked at by the four partner organisations include: a minor upgrade, delivering additional services within a refurbished building, to refurbish the entire ground floor, demolish the site and rebuild a new, larger health centre or demolish and redevelop part of the building.

A spokeswoman from NHS Croydon said it would look at the most affordable option with work expected to start on the site in 2011.

She said: “We understand the difficulties in developing the site have caused frustration and we are committed to finding a solution that will provide high quality healthcare.

“We will continue to work with residents to develop the plans laid out in NHS Croydon’s Primary Care and Community Health Services strategy.

“The new facility will include outpatient services, an urgent care centre and GP out of hours service.”

Plans for a state-of-the-art revamp of the Purley War Memorial Hospital were first revealed in 2001 – but nine years on the proposals have still to come to fruition. The Secretary of State at the time promised “a first class out-patient and diagnostic centre”.
