A West Molesey teenager has signed a contract that could see him enter Formula 3 racing in the next four years.

James Emmerson, 15, signed the sponsorship with Thames Ditton-based Pier 32 racing, which includes a year of testing before the TKM International festival.

James hopes to develop from go karts to single-seat racecars.

Pier 32 owner Gerry Hayter said: “James had the qualities we were looking for in a driver, reserved off the track and a big consideration on it. He has been schooled at Daytona Kart race school and is now experiencing the competitive world of motorsport. He is a name to look out for.”

Pier 32, an ethical clothing company, set up a racing division to encourage and help young people get involved in motorsports.

Andy Lucas, team manager at Pier 32 racing, said: “James has a special opportunity to experience a racing driver’s schedule with testing. He will be mentally prepared for competition and for winning with our training programme.

“To take a four year plan with a naturally talented driver is not so common and we believe that this forward planning model has distinct advantages in the formulation of a top racing team.”
