By Community Correspondent Anish Kaul The World Cup has captured the imagination of millions of people worldwide and has also resulted in a large increase in revenue for local pubs.

In a multicultural nation that clearly loves football, people have turned out in their thousands to watch the teams from around the world in places such as the ‘The Manor’ pub in New Malden.

The landlord there said there had been a ‘big increase’ in the amount of people coming to the pub and consequently an increase in revenue. Changes which have been due to people enjoying the numerous football games on the pubs big screen.

Naturally turnout has been higher at matches involving England, with over 150 people cramming in at the pub to dine on their fingernails as England scraped through the group stages with a 1-0 win over Slovenia. It is estimated that over 10 million people tuned in to watch the game nationwide, but it is a number which is almost certainly higher as the amount of people present at pubs around the country cannot be calculated.

So to those who view the World Cup as a global phenomenon, do not forget that it has effects and ramifications very locally as well. With the World Cup (and subsequent rises in pub revenue) set to continue for another few weeks, it seems that pub landlords now have more than one reason to love football.
