Edgar Davids' Crystal Palace debut ended in defeat after the Eagles exited the Carling Cup in a dramatic penalty shoot out at Portsmouth.

The Eagles, reduced to 10 men when Wilfried Zaha was sent off for a kick on Carl Dickenson on 85 minutes, were beaten 4-3 in the shoot out with both sides needing seven penalties each.

Davids started at left back and played 82 minutes before being replaced by youngster Matt Parsons.

Despite being on top for most of the first half of normal time, Palace found themselves behind 12 minutes after the break when David Nugent scored.

The Eagles came back though and equalised when Ibrahima Sonko put Kieron Cadogan's cross into his own net with 10 minutes left.

Zaha was then red carded before the game went into extra time.

Neither side could win it so it went to penalties Kieran Djilali's opening kick was saved by Jamie Ashdown before Michael Brown, Cadogan and Marc Wilson all scored, giving Portsmouth a 2-1 lead.

Jonathan Obika then missed as did Tommy Smith before Paddy McCarthy and Marlon Pack made it 3-2 after four penalties apiece.

That meant Owen Garvan had to score Palace's fifth, which he did and Nadir Ciftci missed his chance to give Portsmouth the win, leading to sudden death.

Nathanial Clyne and Dickinson then saw their efforts saved, as did Adam Barrett, leaving Richard Hughes with the chance to end the shoot-out which he did by slotting past Julian Speroni.
