Staines Town ran out 2-1 winners at Met Police in their final pre-season fixture ahead of the new campaign.

They were made to work hard for victory and, after Richard Butler's early chance was bravely thwarted by Blues keeper Mo Maan, it was the home side that dominated.

Gary Drewett rattled the post before Met took a 31st-minute lead.

Elliott Taylor's superb-free kick put former Staines player Craig Watkins free and, although Louis Wells thwarted his first attempt, Watkins kept his balance to convert the rebound.

Staines rallied after the break and Gareth Risbridger deftly headed a 55th-minute equaliser following André Scarlett’s great run.

Marc Charles-Smith poached the winner 17 minutes from time, intercepting a weak back-pass to the keeper and slotting home from a tight angle.

Having already landed the Geoff Harvey Memorial Vase and Lord of Ashford In Middlesex Charity Bowl (property of Corinthian-Casuals and Ashford Town (Mx) respectively), Staines got something to take home last Tuesday, when they lifted the Middlesex FA George Russell Shield.

As Senior Cup winners, Staines agreed to concede home advantage to Charity Cup counterparts North Greenford United, who were seemingly blown away by three first half strikes by Leroy Griffiths (two) and Gareth Risbridger.

But it was a different story after the interval, as United clawed their way back through Sean Hillier, Gary Senior, and an own goal, sending the match straight to penalties.

However, sub goalie James Courtnage was the hero, saving from Hiller, while all Staines five takers hit the target, to give them a 5-4 shoot-out win.

Staines played two low-key away games on Wednesday and Thursday.

First, they defeated neighbours Staines Lammas 2-0 (Conor O'Brien and Sam Boultwood), and then went down 3-0 to a good Merstham side, whose goals came from David Smith, Tony Reid, and Billy Marshall.
