Runners from the Fircroft Trust completed the British 10k run in sweltering conditions in London on Sunday, July 11, to raise money for a new home for adults with learning disabilities in Chessington.

The Surrey Comet’s sister paper, the Kingston Guardian, is backing the Fircroft Trust’s charity appeal to raise £1m to convert the derelict White Hart pub in Hook into a home for those with learning difficulties.

Competitors started by Hyde Park and ran along the Victoria Embankment as far as Southwark Bridge, before turning around and heading back to Whitehall via a brief excursion across Westminster Bridge and back.

Running for Fircroft, Paul Seymour came 205th in the race overall - ahead of more than 20,000 others.

Fundraiser Susannah Horwood, who cheered on runners entering the last 2km as they crossed Westminster Bridge, said: “We had 24 runners raising money for us. It was just incredible.

“There was a wonderful atmosphere. We had lots of people looking out for Fircroft Trust shirts and it was so exciting.”

Reporter David Lindsell completed the 10km in just under 51 minutes, raising £200 for Fircroft.
