The first descriptions of two men wanted for the terrifying stabbing of a Morden mum have been released by the police.

The 31-year-old woman was stabbed in the neck by burglars while at home with her 18 month old daughter in the middle of the day. Police are still hunting for the attackers, who broke into the house in St Helier Avenue on May 20.

The woman answered the door to two men who forced their way into the home at about 12.30pm. As the victim struggled with the burglars, she was stabbed once in the neck.

A police spokesman said the victim underwent life-saving surgery after the attack, but has since been discharged from hospital.

The suspects are black, about 20-years-old and 6ft. A police spokesman said they are thought to have run from the house towards Canterbury Road after the stabbing, and appealed for witnesses to the crime to come forward.

Later that day the road was sealed off by the police as more than 20 officers searched the area for evidence. Neighbours said they were shocked by the attack, while St Helier councillor Maxi Martin branded the men who carried it out "scumbags".

The victim's husband and daughter, who was seen being comforted by police officers in the wake of the attack, are thought to have moved out of the house following the stabbing.

Detective Constable Robert Black of Merton CID said: "This was a terrifying attack on a woman who was very seriously injured.

"I am appealing to anyone who may have any information about this incident and particularly may have seen two men fitting the descriptions of the suspects to contact the police."

Anyone with information should call Merton CID on 020 8649 3137, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
