After back-to-back days of incessant British failure (Andy Murray aside of course), a duo of local heroes put a smile back on the nation’s face with a brace of wins in the Men’s Doubles competition on Wednesday.

Former Reeds School pupil Chris Eaton led the charge, teaming up with fellow Brit Dominic Inglot to see off Fabio Fognini and Kevin Ullyet in four tough sets, 6-7 7-5 6-4 7-6 on Court No.6.

Eaton and Inglot will now face either fellow Brits Jamie Murray and Jonathan Marray or number one seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic in the second round.

For Eaton it was a dazzling return to form at SW19, having announced his arrival on that stage with a memorable singles victory over Boris Pasanski in 2008.

That was hot on the heels of Sutton’s Joshua Goodall claiming another hard-fought success as he partnered Jamie Delgado to a four-set win, also on Court No.6.

As with Eaton and Inglot, Goodall and Delgado lost the first set before bouncing back in style to emerge with a 5-7 7-6 6-1 6-3 triumph.

The duo will now face either Argentinian pair Maximo Gonzalez and Sebastian Prieto or number four seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi next time out.

Predictably it was not all good news though, with New Malden’s Mel South falling short in her bid to get a much-needed win on the grass courts.

South, having been bounced out of the singles in rapid fashion on Monday, teamed up with fellow first-round singles loser Anne Keothavong to take on Sania Mirza and Caroline Wozniacki, only to come unstuck 6-4 6-1 in quick time.

Still struggling with her injuries to both knees, South has now elected to withdraw from the Mixed Doubles competition, which will now see Keothavong join forces with Ross Hutchins .
