A con artist who masqueraded as a gas man to trick his way into a 94-year-old woman’s home is wanted by police.

The woman, who lives in Stoford Close, Southfields, let the man in at 4.30pm on Thursday, June 10, after he buzzed on her intercom.

He said he needed to read her gas meter because she had paid too much on her previous bills, and also wanted to check the lights.

When she asked him for identification, he flashed a card before quickly putting it back in his pocket.

She then asked him to leave, which he did, and later the gas company confirmed they sent no-one to her address.

The suspect is described as white, clean shaven, of slim build, with black short curly hair.

He was aged between 20 and 25, up to 6ft 2in tall and wearing a navy blue boiler suit.

Police are appealing to residents to remain vigilant and to contact DC Jon McPhee of Wandsworth Priority Crime Unit on 0208 247 8770 with information on the incident.

To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
