World-renowned fashion photographer Rankin has photographed the chief steward of the Wimbledon Championships as a celebration of this year’s games.

Andrew Gairdner, from Putney, has been helping the public enjoy their day at Wimbledon since 1978, when he first started stewarding.

Rankin, whose real name is John Rankin Waddell, was commissioned by HSBC, official banking partner of Wimbledon.

His project aimed to capture images of those at the All England Lawn Tennis Club who are instrumental in making the tournament happen year after year.

The HSBC Rankin Gallery can be viewed at wimbledon.org/hsbc and will be displayed in the Wimbledon queue during the championships.

The photographer said: “All the subjects within the gallery form an integral part of Wimbledon and they make it the great institution that it is.

“Their commitment to perfection is admirable, and their passion for their profession evident from the moment you meet them.

“They are an inspiring group and I am pleased glad to have photographed them.”

The gallery also features portraits of tennis legends John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg, who were photographed to commemorate the 30th anniversary of their 1980 singles final.
