It has been a prominent fixture in the events calendar since 1877; Eight out of ten of us watch it, over a third of us take time off work to watch it, and it is gaining in popularity a fifth of us say, owing to Andy Murray –a study by Robinsons has revealed. The Wimbledon Championships are here again, and we couldn’t imagine a Summer without it.

Cut grass, crisp tennis whites, strawberries, colourful personalities and nail-biting matches – Wimbledon evokes so many vivid memories. As an integral part of the great Wimbledon tradition since 1935 and to mark the 75th anniversary of its Wimbledon sponsorship, Robinsons asked the UK to vote for the Top 10 Most Memorable Wimbledon Moments; the nation has spoken and the results are in.

The study of 5,000 people revealed it is game, set and match for John McEnroe, as nearly a third (29%) of the UK voted his outburst of ‘You can not be serious!’ to the umpire as the nation’s most vivid memory of Wimbledon. 83 per cent of the population also identify this as the most memorable tennis player’s tantrum.

The UK’s Top 10 Most Memorable Moments, as voted for by the British public, are:

1. When McEnroe was just a youngster and said “You cannot be serious” to the umpire.

2. When it rained and Cliff Richard sang to the crowd!

3. When McEnroe and Borg played a never-ending tie-break, but Borg won the match.

4. When Virginia Wade won the women’s title.

5. When Tim Henman first reached the semi-finals.

6. When Federer won Wimbledon and his 15th grand slam title beating Sampras’ record.

7. When Nadal won, beating Federer, and climbed through the stands to hug his family and then shake hands with the Spanish crown Prince.

8. When Boris Becker at just 17, became the first unseeded player to win.

9. When Venus Williams played Serena Williams for the first time & When wildcard Goran Ivanisevic won the men’s title beating Pat Rafter and knocking Tim Henman out on the way.

10. The year Pat Cash won against world No1 Ivan Lendl and broke tradition by climbing up the grandstand to enjoy the win with his family.
