The mayor of Elmbridge Councillor Barry Cheyne got involved in Volunteers Week on Wednesday, June 9, by delivering meals on wheels to residents at the Walton Centre for Retired People.
He was accompanied by his wife Houda and Jeannette Sider, who has been a volunteer for 19 years.
Coun Cheyne said: “It was a great pleasure for the mayoress and I to go out with the Meals on Wheels service to visit and speak with some of our very elderly and most fragile residents in the Walton area.
“These people rely very much on the service not only for their daily hot meal but also, in many instances, for the only visitor they see. This is a vital service to the community which must be preserved and is only made possible by the efforts of the volunteers who turn out every day regardless of the weather to make sure that our old and housebound receive a nourishing hot meal every day.”
