Jimmy Cooper is tipping Eddie Smith to prove a hit at Imber Court after the Metropolitan Police boss announced the striker as one of his key summer signings.

Smith arrives from fellow Ryman Division One South side Fleet Town, where he was both a popular and prolific striker.

And the Blues manager reckons the frontman will provide the answer to many of his side’s problems.

Cooper said: “The truth of the matter is we did not score enough goals last season.

“The stats simply do not lie.

“If we are to improve this season that is something that has to be corrected.

“With Eddie we know what we are getting and he pretty much averages a goal every other game.

“He is very, very quick.

“He is a very hard-working centre forward who if given half a chance is likely to put it in the net.”

Smith has been joined on the new arrival list by Walton & Hersham defender Adam Broomhead, with more names set to follow.

But on the way out are Will Packham, Lee Gledhill, Paul Honey and Phil Ruggles.

And Cooper admits getting the balance of the squad right is his key task this summer.

He added: “We had a fantastic team last season but as soon as the injuries hit we had no real strength in depth.

“That cost us any chance of making the play-offs and we needed to change that.

“I think with the squad we are putting together now we will go very close again this season.

“Pre-season will be very important for us but I will not be bringing the players in early like some teams are.

“The season starts later this year so we will not get going until July, as we need to be fresh straight from the off.”
