George Burley has laid out his plans for Crystal Palace after being named their new manager yesterday, with backroom staff and new players top of his list.

The Scot, who signed a two-year deal, has just two weeks until his squad returns for pre-season but, apart from his assistant manager Dougie Freedman, has very little training ground staff.

There are also only 10 senior professionals on the books, something he will look to improve immediately.

"There's a lot of work to be done," said the 54 year-old.

"We need backroom staff and we need players.

"We've got a small squad at the moment and we need to try and improve that and sort out the players who are out of contract and the players with only a year left on their contracts.

"That's got to be the priority as well as staff.

"We need some staff as at the minute we don't have any.

"It's a fresh start for the club which is a good thing but there is not much time to do it."

Burley, who will move into a house he owns in Fulham, also revealed his plans to bring youngsters through and not spend big on new players.

"We are not going to do a Chelsea and throw silly money at it," he said.

"The club has had its problems with finance and the new consortium realise that and they want a sound basis.

"The future of this club is for us to keep working hard on the training ground bringing young players through and sticking to our budget.

"We need to get the fans and everyone in the community to be part of it and make it a family club, that is the way forward.

"I've had a look around and been here numerous times as a player and a manager and there is huge potential.

"Crystal Palace are a big club who bring young, exciting, players through.

"If you look at the history they've done very well over the years and it's a club that can push all the way up to the Premiership."
