A group has been created to revive an historic greenspace.

The Friends of Grangewood Park was set up in March this year and aims to preserve, maintain and enhance Grangewood Park and promote its use by the local community.

Located on Grange Road between Thornton Heath, Upper Norwood and South Norwood, the park is a remnant of the Great North Wood (Norwood) and was part of a private estate between the 12th and 18th centuries with a mansion, ornamental gardens, pond and woodland walks.

The Corporation of Croydon bought the park for the public in 1900 and added a bowling green, tennis courts and a band stand which held concerts during the summer.

The group will be organising activities and events throughout the year, starting with a Big Lunch to celebrate the national event on 18 July.

The Grangewood Park Big Lunch: Picnic in the Park, will be held on Sunday July 18 from 11am - 3pm with free activities for all including music sessions, storytelling, drumming workshops and face painting.
