Dedicated Kingston University students who have given time to volunteering projects in the community were awarded at a special evening recently.

The Student Union’s annual volunteer awards evening recognised a variety of work, including walking retired racing greyhounds and mentoring adults with learning disabilities.

Among the winners were school volunteers of the year, Paula Southam and Sinem Tekes, who both mentor vulnerable pupils at Tolworth Junior School, and best newcomer Will Scott-Barrett, who volunteers as a front counter assistant at Kingston police station.

Exchange student Lisa Ta was awarded as the most original entry, after she started knit for babies, a project where she taught volunteers to knit hats for premature babies at Kingston Hospital.

A volunteering England gold award went to 20-year-old David Brunning for his support of scout and guide marching bands in Hook. He was not present to receive his award because he was in the US, volunteering at a camp for burns victims.
