A Caribbean charity needs your vote to get much-needed lottery money to complete a dynamic film project.

The Cause 2000, this year’s Croydon Champions Charity, is in the running to get £47,000 for a follow up to a Heritage film called They Came They Stayed.

After the Second World War, people from the Caribbean were invited by the British government to settle in this country and help with the post war reconstruction efforts. Many left professional jobs such as teaching, nursing and the civil service to end up as porters, bus drivers and railway attendants.

Mac McKenzie, the founder of the Cause 2000, produced the film with the help of teenage descendents of those who came after the war. They were taught the art of interviewing and film making.

Mrs McKenzie said: “There appears to be a stark knowledge gap between the older and younger generations in the Caribbean community. This project provided a way of bridging that gap, whilst enabling the young people to acquire new skills.

“They learnt how their ancestors paved the way for them, about the challenges they faced. Now they know they need to make something of their lives. All the participants said they learnt so much from these important role models.”

A follow-up film is planned in which the young film makers will explore their own experiences and talk about their futures.

But the charity needs your votes to be in with a chance of financing the film.

To cast your vote go to www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards and click on Best Heritage Project or call 0844 686 3017, calls cost 5p.

Voting ends at midday on June 18.
