The Union Jack will be hoisted in a show of support for British servicemen and women.

The flag – with the words "Armed Forces Day, Show Your Support" on it - will be hoisted in the town centre Monday at 10.30am.

It will fly throughout the week as part of a series of events being held nationwide leading up to Armed Forces Day on Saturday 26 June.

Supporters are invited to attend the event at the flagpole near to the junction of High Street with St Nicholas Road.

At the event will be the mayor of Sutton, Councillor Margaret Court, and members of the Royal British Legion, the Air and Sea Cadets and the Territorial Army.

Sutton Council deputy leader Ruth Dombey said: "This is an opportunity for the people of Sutton to show their support for our military community.

"It's a way of showing our appreciation for the contribution made by our brave men and women across the world."

Last year, more than 3,000 flags were hoisted across the British Isles, including 500 flown by local authorities.

Flags were also flown in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Falkland Islands and Fiji.
