Before Wednesday 17th March it can’t be said that many people knew nor loved the story of “The Wedding Singer”. On the surface it can be seen as just another cliché love story: boy likes girl; girl likes boy; there are complications but girl and boy live happily ever after, together. And of course, as tradition bears it, everyone leaves wondering why their life isn’t that magical? But the talent of the Sutton High and Sutton Grammar schools ensured that there wasn’t one unhappy spectator.

Surprisingly, the legend that is “The Wedding Singer” didn’t start out as a musical: it was initially released in 1998 as a comedy film starring Adam Sandler. In April 2006 the musical was opening on Broadway and ran through until December, after a total 284 performances.

In contrast, our production lasted for four nights, but if you missed it, you certainly missed out! This years collaboration brought forth some of the most enthusiastic and outgoing young people, with wide ranging talents including singing, dancing and acting; and those are just the performers!

With an animated entrance - including resounding guitars and lively dancing – the audience was hooked at once. The students performed their hearts out and provided the viewers with many laughs and heartfelt moments, as the story, put to music, unfolded in front of everyone. One spectator exclaimed that “It just didn’t stop! It was full of energy from start to finish!” Of course, much of that fluency can be attributed to the hard work of the dedicated production team: the sound and stage crew.

The commitment and enthusiasm added by the band was also important in the success of the production. Live music truly enhanced the magic of the nights and added to the professionalism and slickness of the performance.

With praise offered from across the board, “The Wedding Singer” has earned its place as one of the hit joint performances of the schools. It had consumed the lives of those involved for a good six months, and now it shall be sorely missed, but the memories will stay with us for a lifetime.
