With the constantly fluctuating weather in this country, one of the only real signs of summer is the arrival of the May music concert, and this year’s proved to be as spectacular and memorable as ever.

Every spring Sutton High holds its annual summer concert including popular items such as the chamber choir, the orchestra and the percussion ensemble, as well as much anticipated solo acts. It is the perfect evening to showcase our talented musicians and if you didn’t come, you certainly missed out!

The orchestra opened the evening with a stunning, jovial rendition of “Singing in the Rain”, which, surprisingly, was not befitting the peaceful, warm evening. However, it went down a treat with the audience and was followed by a section of a suite from Vaughan Williams.

The chamber choir performed an unforgettable interpretation of that well known classic, “All that Jazz” from Chicago, which transported the audience back to the prohibition-era America. But perhaps the highlight of the night was the choral performance of Karl Jenkins’ “Adiemus”. With string and woodwind accompaniment, the rendition had an epic quality inspired by gospel and African indigenous music, making it breathtaking.

There were also a great number of solo acts, some including musicians from Sutton Grammar School too. The first was a heart warming cover of Demi Lovato’s “Catch Me”, with Lily Byrant as the vocalist and Jennifer Esson on guitar, and this brought a smile to everyone’s face. Another particularly memorable performance was that of Katy Perry’s “Keel Over” with Becky Gordon as the lead vocalist, and Sutton Grammar’s Hugh Young on guitar and backing vocals.

The concert was, as ever, an absolute success, with refreshments at the interval in aid of the World Challenge trip to Madagascar. Music has never sounded so sweet; a perfect start to the summer.
