Five Sutton residents have been banned from travelling to the World Cup as part of a police crackdown on hooliganism.

Sutton Police have confirmed the five men listed on the Football Banning Authority’s records have been asked to surrender their passports to stop them flying out to South Africa.

Two of the men have already surrendered their passports while another’s has been retained by the Passport Office. Another man is already serving a prison sentence for a separate matter, unrelated to football.

A spokesman for Sutton Police said: “The fifth individual is living in the Midlands, despite being registered in Sutton, and we are liaising with the Football Banning Authority regarding him.”

It is believed more than 3,000 supporters across the UK have been issued with banning orders prior to the World Cup.
