England fans were out in force in Sutton on Saturday night as Fabio Capello’s men put the nation through the mill once again.

Bars and pubs in Sutton High Street were packed out with St George’s crosses and flags in anticipation of a much-needed win against the USA.

The Cock and Bull, the Sutton Arms and The Treasury Bar were full of fans put through the full range of emotions usually associated with England games – over-confidence and elation followed by despair.

Despite an early goal from skipper Steven Gerrard, England surrendered their lead just before half-time when keeper Robert Green’s blunder allowed the USA to equalise.

Sutton Police reported a quiet first World Cup weekend.Officers said a number of pubs in Wallington were quieter than usual, while the licensed premises in Sutton town centre that were screening the football were busy.

There were no football-related arrests, with landlords telling police they believed many people were having football parties at home.

Chief Insp Mark Hill said he was pleased with the arrangements police had put in place beforehand. Some larger venues had door staff on duty two hours before kick off, and police officers made visits to licensed premises during the evening to check if there were any concerns to be dealt with.

Chief Insp Operations Mark Hill, of Sutton Police station, said: “It’s right that we are talking to some businesses individually because they vary greatly in their capability to show live matches.”

“We want this to be a great time for England supporters, and we hope the policing measures will make sure those who want to enjoy themselves can do so safely.”
