New Malden is in "absolute chaos" after police set up an exclusion zone following the discovery of a suspect package near the Fountain Roundabout this afternoon.
Police said the package was found in Martin House, a four-storey block of flats in Charnwood Close, off Kingston Road.
A 150m section of Kingston Road, between the roundabout and Connaught Road, is currently cordoned off.
Residents initially thought the package was on a double decker bus left in the middle of the road near the roundabout, but firemen on the scene said this was not the case.
The 131 bus service is being diverted via the Triangle and Kingston Hospital.
