Surrey Police has been criticised for its slow response to a mass brawl in Weybridge on Saturday, June 12, following England’s opening game of the World Cup.

A police spokesman confirmed the force had attended the Percy Lambert pub in Weybridge High Street at about 11.30pm, after two women became involved in a shouting match.

Witnesses said one of the women punched the other in the face before running away.

The 24-year-old was left with minor injuries, including a swollen lip, but no arrests have been made.

One witness, who did not wish to be named, said: "I left the Slug and Lettuce at about closing time and heard lots of shouting.

"I looked down the road and saw outside the Abbey National cashpoint a group of people and a fight was kicking off.

"Then I saw a few doors down there was also a fight outside the Percy Lambert - it was like a street brawl. I couldn’t work out who was fighting who. It was mental.

"There were about 10 people involved in the fight near the cashpoint and 20 to 30 people fighting outside the pub.

"I don’t know if the two fights were related, but I saw one guy fall to the floor and another guy was shouting because the police had not arrived.

"He was saying: ‘My girlfriends been hit, where are the police?’

"The bouncers from both the pubs had to step in.

"I just feel in a situation like that you expect the police to turn up, but it took them ages until they did.

"When they finally got there, there was just one car, with no sirens and it kind of just crawled up to the curb.

"By that time everyone involved in the fight had dispersed, so I’m not surprised no one was arrested."

A police spokesman said weekends, particularly when England were playing, were “demanding for police resources”, but extensive preparations had been made to address this.

He said: “Surrey Police aims to answer all non-emergency calls promptly. In this case the suspects and the victim had left the scene by the time the matter was reported and officers attended the location as quickly as possible.

“The matter is now being thoroughly and extensively investigated by Surrey Police and this includes reviewing local CCTV footage.”

The attacker was a stocky white woman with blonde hair wearing bright pink lipstick.
