A chaplaincy volunteer is taking to the sky on July 24 in an effort to jump over the final fundraising hurdle and raise the last bit of money needed for the restoration of the Mayday chapel.

Melvin Demmen will leap out of a plane to raise the last £7,000 needed to complete the renovation of the chapel, which has been the spiritual heart of Mayday Hospital for over 100 years.

So far an impressive £43,622 has been raised for its refurbishment which has paid for two of the main stained glass windows to be fully restored, the interior completely redecorated, new lighting and heating fitted, plus a new screen is now in place providing greater privacy for Muslim and Jewish worshippers.

But, there is still more to do, with the roof to finish, four further windows to restore and a sound system to complete.

Mr Demmen said: “I’ve taken on this challenge as I know how important the Chapel is to patients and their families, as a place of peace and reflection. I’ve also been a patient, so I know first hand how important is to have this sanctuary here.

“By doing the jump I hope to raise money to help get this important project finished and the chapel back to its best.”
