A keen gardener has celebrated her 100th birthday with a tea party for friends and family.

Elsie Poague, a long-term Ewell resident, who moved to Sutton after retirement, celebrated her 100th birthday on May 27.

She was born in Balham, lived for a long while in Ewell where she developed her love of gardening and then retired to Sutton nearly 30 years ago.

For several years she was awarded prizes in the borough’s best kept gardens competition, and still takes great pride in her roses.

She lives independently in her own home, with support from carers since breaking a hip last summer.

Mrs Poague celebrated her birthday with a tea party for friends and family, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

She said: "It was lovely to see so many people again after such a time. It was a very happy afternoon."
