Veteran Ashtead councillor John Northcott has been elected as chairman of Mole Valley District Council for the next year.
Councillor Northcott who is an independent supported by Ashtead Residents Association, has just been returned as councillor for Ashtead Common ward with an increased majority at the recent election.
The election saw the council move from Conservative control to no overall majority.
James Friend, the new leader of the Conservative Party is the new leader of the council, with Councillor Kathryn Westwood as deputy leader.
